Getting Ready

Published by nitouken at 8:51 pm under Implements Edit This

Today I found myself ready to start. So I took the old computer that is going to be rebuilt (a Hewlett Packard Vectra, according to the case label), and tried to boot it up. It booted Windows NT 4.0. Very, very slowly. So, when I saw the NT logo appear, I already knew that I had a good candidate for a complete erase. Unfortunately for me, it is password protected. That makes the rest of my life a little more difficult. Fortunately, on the other hand, while trying to make my life easier before deleting Vista, I discovered an interesting little disk utility. This program is called GPartEd (pronounced gee-parted, I think), which stands for the GNU Partition Editor. Nice, technical, slightly intimidating name. It is, however, easy to use. So I downloaded a new copy and started to get it set up. If you have a use for it (and I will get into the various uses that it has later), you can get it yourself at the link in the sidebar. I recommend the LiveCD version. This thing is great, because you just burn it onto a CD, and then stick it in the CD drive of the computer you are working on. It boots straight into GPartEd, no muss, no fuss. Right now I am going to go ahead and see what I can find out about this computer through GPartEd.
